Moving into your first apartment? Here's exactly what to buy.
We split it into three lists: the day-one essentials (the stuff you need before you sleep there), the week-one upgrades (the stuff that makes it livable), and what we'd skip (the stuff every list tells you to buy that's a waste).
Day-one essentials (before you sleep there)
Bedding (sheets, pillow, duvet), shower curtain + liner, toilet paper, hand soap, kitchen trash can + bags, surge protector, a single skillet + spatula, a mug, basic tool kit, light bulbs in case the unit doesn't include them, and a multi-cord phone charger. That's the floor. Everything else can wait a day.
Week-one upgrades
Vacuum (cordless if budget allows — cheap and life-changing for hardwoods), drying rack (saves on laundry costs), full pot set, measuring cups, baking sheet, mid-tier knife (not a knife block — one good chef's knife), cutting board, hangers (a lot of them), and a small lamp for the bedroom.
What we'd skip
Knife blocks (you'll use one knife). Stand mixers (you don't bake). Air fryers (you have an oven). Coffee table books (no one looks at them). The Costco-pack of dish soap (you'll move before you finish it). Towel sets in matching colors (use what you have).

Frequently asked questions
How much should this cost?+
Day-one essentials: $250-400. Week-one: $400-700 on top. Skip the rest until you actually need it.
Furniture too?+
We handle gear and accessories, not furniture. Get a mattress first, source the rest secondhand.
What if I'm moving in with a roommate?+
Split the kitchen and bathroom essentials. Buy your own bedding and chargers.
