Moving across the country — the gear that survives.

Long-distance moves break things, lose things, and tax you in unexpected ways. Here's the gear that actually helps — including the items most moving lists forget.

Packing supplies that actually help

Real moving boxes (rented from U-Haul is cheaper than Amazon for medium boxes). Heavy-duty packing tape with a dispenser (not the cheap stuff). Permanent markers (a lot of them). Stretch wrap (for couches, drawers staying together). TV box specifically rated for shipping (Amazon).

Vehicle prep if you're driving

Jump starter, full tire inflator, oil + transmission fluid check. AAA membership if you don't have it. Cooler with snacks (gas station food adds up fast). Mounting solution for your phone (mid-trip nav is essential).

What every list forgets

Toilet paper, soap, towels, and bedding in a separately labeled box — accessible day one of arrival before you've unpacked anything. A coffee solution (cheap pour-over) for the first morning. A power strip + extension cord for the first night (don't unpack to find them at midnight). Cleaning supplies (the new place is probably dirtier than the listing photo).

Frequently asked questions

Renting moving truck vs hiring movers?+

Under 1,000 miles: rent. Over 1,500 miles: hire. In between depends on your physical bandwidth.

What about the cat?+

Calming pheromone spray, a carrier they like, soft food for the trip, and a calming chew. Vet about meds if it's a long trip.
