Freshman dorm — the only shopping list you need

Targeted for a standard dorm: small bed, small desk, shared bath. Day-one essentials, week-one comfort upgrades, and what every other dorm list tells you to buy that's a waste.

Day-one essentials

Twin XL bedding (sheets, pillow, duvet or comforter), shower caddy + flip-flops, towels (2 sets), surge protector with USB ports, desk lamp, basic toiletries kit, laundry hamper that compresses, basic laundry detergent pods, hangers, and a reusable water bottle.

Week-one upgrades

A small fan (dorms get hot), bedside organizer (caddy that hangs on the bed frame), under-bed storage bins, basic toolkit for assembling whatever, a printer if your school's printing is bad, mattress topper (game-changer for thin dorm mattresses), and a kettle (allowed in most dorms).

What we'd skip

Microwave + fridge combo (school usually rents these — check first). Loft kits (most dorm beds adjust). Decorative pillows (you'll throw them on the floor). Mini-trampolines (no). Snack subscription boxes (the dining hall is right there). Anything labeled "dorm room essentials" that's actually decor.

Frequently asked questions

Does my school's policy matter?+

Yes — check the appliance list before buying anything plug-in. Some schools ban kettles, some ban microwaves.

How much should I spend?+

$250-500 if you're shipping vs hauling. Bedding is the single biggest line item.

What about textbooks?+

Rent, don't buy. Chegg, Amazon Rentals, or the campus bookstore rental program.
