College care package — what to send.
Care packages are about connection, not stuff. The best ones combine 1-2 useful items, 1-2 homesickness-killers (food from home, photos), and a handwritten note.
What goes in (the formula)
1-2 useful items (laundry pods, energy drinks, instant coffee). 1-2 comfort items (their favorite snacks from home, a hoodie). 1 unexpected delight (a small framed photo, a goofy item from their childhood, a polaroid you took). 1 handwritten note. That's the formula.
When to send
Mid-October (homesickness peak), pre-finals (December), post-spring-break, and exam time (late April). Don't send weekly — it loses meaning. Three times a semester is the sweet spot.
What not to send
Anything perishable that won't survive 3-5 days of shipping. Anything heavy that's expensive to ship. Anything embarrassing if their roommate sees it. Money in cash (use Venmo).
Frequently asked questions
Box or padded envelope?+
Box. Padded envelopes get destroyed at the post office.
Best snacks?+
