New puppy? The exact gear for day one.

Bringing home a puppy is exciting and overwhelming. Here's the day-one kit, the week-one upgrades, and what we'd skip — calibrated for first-time owners and apartment dwellers.

Day-one essentials

Crate (size for adult dog, divider for now), food bowl + water bowl (stainless steel — not plastic), leash (6 ft standard nylon), collar with ID tag, harness, treats for training, enzymatic cleaner for accidents (you'll need it within 24 hours), and a chew toy that's actually durable (Kong Classic in the right size).

Week-one upgrades

Pee pads (if apartment), grooming brush appropriate to coat type, nail clippers, dog toothbrush + paste, dog bed for outside the crate, training clicker, and a long lead line (15 ft) for recall practice in the yard.

What we'd skip

Cute outfits (dogs don't want them). Squeaky toys that destroy in 10 minutes (waste of money). The fancy dog bed for the first month (they'll destroy it). Retractable leashes (dangerous for puppies). Plastic bowls (cause acne on the chin).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a crate?+

Yes. It's the single most important tool for housebreaking and providing a safe space. Get one.

What about food?+

Match what the breeder/shelter fed for 2 weeks, then transition slowly. Don't buy a giant bag of unknown brand on day one.

Pet insurance?+

Yes — sign up before the first vet visit. Pre-existing conditions aren't covered later.
